Named for exposures at Gold Hill, 7 km north of Twinning, NM, Red River quad, Taos Co, NM, Southern Rocky Mountain region. Stratotype is at Gold Hill in the Taos Range. Consists of mafic and felsic layered gneiss. Contains intrusive rocks that were metamorphosed and multiply deformed. Obsolete USGS topographical maps of California. USGS topographical maps are listed by quadrangle not by place name. If you are unsure of the name of the quad that covers the place you are searching you can use the USGS index on-line to get the name of the appropriate quad. One of the very few books with information on where to find gold in Utah. Therefore, it wasn’t until that a gold discovery was reported. Westbound travelers on their way to California found gold at Gold Hill in Tooele County. Native Americans initially drove away prospectors, discouraging any mining in the area.
Prospectors were persistent, however, and inthe Clifton (Gold Hill) district was organized. This was only temporary and in the schoolhouse was locked for the last time and the post office was finally closed inadding Gold Hill to the list of Utah’s ghost towns.
In its history the town boasted a population of up to people. The town had salons, stores, pool halls, a post office and even a newspaper (The Gold Hill News). Gold Hill is on Gold Hill Wash, three miles southeast of Woodman -by towns include Ibapah, five miles to the south/southwest, Callao miles south and Wendover miles to the north.
